Lower Secondary Programme (LSP)

“Nurturing young minds to think critically, act confidently,

and thrive in a changing world."

The Lower Secondary Programme (LSP) is a 3-year program designed by KIST for students 11 - 14 years old, enrolled in Grades 6 - 8. The main purpose of the LSP is to prepare students for future learning in IGCSE in Grades 9 - 10, and the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11 - 12, by delivering a learning program that nurtures their academic skills knowledge, and life skills to a become a highly skilled global citizen.

Some parts of the framework of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) will be incorporated in most of the subjects to cover the inquiry skills that are essential in the DP. Curriculum content for Mathematics, Science, English, and Computing (for which the first examination will be held in 2025) is based on the Pearson Edexcel iLowerSecondary Curriculum. Pearson allows public access to the subject guides for Mathematics, Science and English subjects and these can be explored by any parent through the Pearson website.

One of the many merits of the LSP curriculum is that it covers the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the IGCSE and DP. For example, in mathematics, a subject that has been taught in the IGCSE curriculum since 2014 at KIST, the content of the IGCSE Further Pure Math covers about half of the DP Math analysis & approaches HL content. Given that the Edexcel iLowerSecondary Mathematics is a course that officially continues to the IGCSE, learning in the LSP would prepare students for the DP.

In Grade 8, the final year of the LSP, students will sit for the official Edexcel exams for Mathematics, and Computing. One of the advantages of this is that the students will get used to the environment of official examinations at early stage; both IGCSE and DP have external exams at the end of their programs. Furthermore, receiving the results of official examinations enables an objective measure of the skills and knowledge acquired by students.
